The Seller's Guide to the Shop App, Part 1: What It Is and How It Works

If you're running a Shopify store, there's a decent chance your customers are already using the Shop app to track their orders from you, and you've never thought about it once. That's actually fine as a starting point. But once you understand what Shop is and what it can do for your brand, "never thought about it" stops being a reasonable position.

This is Part 1 of a two-part guide. Here we cover what the Shop app is, why buyers use it, and how Shop Pay and discovery work. Part 2 covers your branded Shop Store, eligibility requirements, troubleshooting, and listing optimization.

What Is the Shop App?

The Shop app is a free consumer shopping app built by Shopify. It gives buyers one place to track orders, discover new brands, and check out quickly across thousands of Shopify-powered stores. Think of it as the layer that sits between your customers and the broader Shopify ecosystem: a persistent presence on their phone that stays relevant between purchases, not just during them.

It's more than a directory of stores. Shop is an ongoing relationship channel: order tracking, personalized discovery, saved payment information, and cashback rewards all in one place. For sellers, that means a brand presence that lives on a customer's phone after the purchase, not just during it. Which is considerably more valuable than a receipt email they'll never open.

Any Shopify seller who meets the eligibility requirements can list and sell on Shop. It's not invitation-only. There's no application process. Eligibility is determined automatically based on your store and account settings, which we'll cover in Part 2.

Where Does Shop Work?

Shop is available as a free app on iOS and Android. There's also a web version at shop.app, so buyers can access it from a desktop browser without downloading anything. The app is available in all countries where Shopify Payments is supported: a broad international footprint across North America, Europe, Australia, and beyond, in 14 languages.

One geographic note worth knowing: Shop Campaigns, the paid promotion feature within the app, is currently limited to US and Canadian merchants. Basic listing and selling on Shop is global. So if you're outside North America and wondering whether any of this applies to you: most of it does, with that one exception.

Why Do Buyers Actually Use It?

Order tracking is the primary reason people install Shop. The app automatically aggregates tracking across every Shopify store a buyer has ordered from, all in one feed, without the buyer doing any setup.

Even merchants who've never heard of Shop may already have customers tracking their orders through it. It's the kind of thing that happens to you whether you're paying attention or not.

Beyond tracking, a few things work together to keep buyers in the app. Shop Pay saves their shipping and payment information so checkout on any Shopify store is a single tap. Shop Cash gives them cashback rewards on eligible purchases. The in-app discovery feed surfaces new brands and products based on their tastes.

Together, these create a habit loop that benefits sellers who show up well inside it.

There are situations where a buyer might go directly to your website instead. Some prefer the full brand experience, especially for browsing editorial content, reading detailed specs, or using loyalty programs that aren't integrated with Shop. But for repeat purchases and everyday shopping, the convenience of Shop Pay and in-app tracking is a strong pull that works in your favor once you're listed.

How Shop Pay Changes Checkout

Shop Pay is Shopify's accelerated checkout. Buyers enter their email, shipping address, and payment information once, and from then on they can complete a purchase on any Shopify store with a single tap. It's the same general idea as Apple Pay or Google Pay, but built specifically for Shopify stores and deeply integrated with the Shop app.

If you've ever watched someone abandon a cart because checkout had too many fields, you understand why one-tap checkout matters.

Shop Cash is the cashback rewards program tied to Shop Pay. When eligible purchases are made through the Shop app using Shop Pay, buyers earn Shop Cash they can spend on future purchases. The detail sellers always want confirmed: Shopify funds these rewards, not you. There's no additional cost for Shop Cash orders, and you receive your normal payout.

The one accounting note is that Shop Cash orders show up in your payouts labeled as shop_cash, which some third-party accounting tools may need to be configured to recognize.

Shop Pay Installments is the buy-now-pay-later option: buyers can split a purchase into four interest-free payments or longer-term financing. It's powered by Affirm and available in the US.

For sellers, the important part is that you receive the full payment upfront. Shopify and Affirm handle the installment risk. You don't wait for each payment to arrive, which makes it considerably less stressful than it might sound.

How Discovery Works in Shop

The Shop app has a built-in search that surfaces products and stores from across the Shopify ecosystem. Results are filtered by default to items that are in stock and ship to the buyer's location, which means your discoverability is tied directly to your inventory status and shipping zones. Buyers can also filter to stores they already follow, which is why building a follower base inside Shop pays compounding dividends over time.

The Shop feed and search rankings are personalized by AI based on a buyer's order history, browsing behavior, saved stores, and stated preferences. Sellers don't configure this directly; the algorithm does the work.

But product data quality feeds directly into how well your products surface. Clear titles, complete descriptions, and accurate category assignments aren't just housekeeping: they're inputs the algorithm actually uses.

Shop also features curated editorial placements: Gift Guides, Spotlight sections, City Guides, and Shop Local (which surfaces stores within roughly 30 miles of a buyer's location for merchants with active retail locations). These placements are selected by Shop's editorial team.

Merchants can't apply. The Shop team reaches out when they're interested. You can't buy your way in, which gives those placements genuine credibility with shoppers, for whatever that's worth.

Can I Pay for More Visibility?

Yes, through Shop Campaigns, a paid promotion program that places your products in front of new, returning, or lapsed customers across the Shop app, the Shop website, and the Shopify Product Network. The key distinction from traditional ad platforms: Shop Campaigns runs on a cost-per-acquisition model.

You define a maximum amount you're willing to pay per conversion, and you only pay when a sale happens. Not for impressions. Not for clicks. Only for sales.

That model makes Shop Campaigns meaningfully different from most paid channels, where the meter runs whether a purchase happens or not. The tradeoff is that you have less direct control over placement and creative than you would on a traditional ad platform. You set the CPA ceiling and the budget; Shop does the targeting.

Organic visibility and Shop Campaigns aren't an either/or. Organic is the foundation: being listed with strong product data, having followers, and appearing in search results. It's free but it scales slowly.

Campaigns are the accelerant for reaching buyers who haven't discovered you yet. Most sellers who do well on Shop use both. (Shop Campaigns is currently available to US and Canadian merchants only.)

Part 2 of this guide covers your branded Shop Store, what eligibility actually requires, common listing issues and how to fix them, and the highest-leverage optimizations to improve your performance once you're live.
